Former WASPaLM and WPF President Utz Merten Dies

The family of Dr. Med. Utz P. Merten, former president of WASPaLM and the World Pathology Foundation announced the passing of Dr. Merten on January 11, 2025.

In deep grief we have to share that our beloved Utz fell asleep peacefully on the morning of January 11, 2025. After a serious illness and long fight, we were by his side until the end.

In endless love and gratitude we say goodbye to our beloved Husband, Daddy, Grandpa, Father-in-law, Brother and Uncle. We will miss you very much.

The funeral will take place on Thursday, January 16, 2025 at 10 AM at the Westfriedhof, Cologne, Venloerstr. 1132, 50829, Cologne. Men attending are asked to wear head coverings.

Dr. Merten was born on Juy 22, 1942.  He followed in the footsteps of his father, serving in various capacities in both WASPaLM and the World Pathology Foundation.  In 1999, Dr. Merten became President of WASPaLM. In recognition of his many accomplishments, Dr. Merten received WASPaLM's highest honor, The Gold-Headed Cane. He served from 2008-2010 as President of the World Pathology Foundation and was succeeded by his dear friend Robby Bacchus who died in June 2020.  Dr. Merten prepared his obituary.

His wisdom, friendship, humor and guidance sustained international pathology over 4 decades.  In 2015, Dr. Merten wrote Volume II of the History of WASPaLM which was published in electronic form by Apple.

All of pathology worldwide mourn his loss.
